I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, students and parents for another great term and wish them a very well deserved break!
As we come to the end of this very busy Term, we reach the halfway mark of the academic year for Years 7 - 10. Traditionally this is a time of formal reporting on the progress of the students to their families and a time for positive feedback and reflection.
I would like to share with you a personal mantra of mine that I have developed over the years; “the past is the past, there is nothing we can do to change what was, we can only focus on changing what will be.” It is important at this time to support our young people in their learning as they move forward in their educational journeys; taking pride in and celebrating their successes, supporting them with identified areas of improvement and helping them set direction for further development in their learning for the rest of the year.
A simple yet effective approach can be sitting down with your child or young person in your care, looking over their reports and getting them to reflect on their work in Terms 1 and 2. Some questions to ask could include:
- What is it that I want out of St Johns?
- What are three things that really worked well for me in Terms 1 and 2?
- What are 2 things that didn’t work well for me?
- What steps could I take to turn those two things around?
- Who are the people that could help me with this? And,
- How and when will I know if I am successful?
Once these reflective questions have been asked and answered, I have always found it a great exercise to have our young people write these in their diaries as reminders. Another great follow up exercise is to work with them in creating specific check-in points in Term 3 to see how they are travelling with their goals. This helps to create and sustain momentum and shows genuine care and interest.
Research shows that students who have a family that is supportive and interested in their studies, perform better than equally talented students with no home support or interest.
It’s not about doing the work with or for your child, it is about the time and presence that is generated by genuine interest and care.
If at any time you need additional support or information, please do not hesitate to contact your son, daughter or person in your care’s PALS teacher or classroom teacher via the school number.
Again, I wish you all a safe and peaceful break and look forward to seeing everyone bright eyed and ready to go in Term 3.
Mr James Eirth

Educating your child is a shared responsibility between teachers and parents, hence it is important for parents to have conversations with their child about their learning so that they are informed.
Year 7 Semester 1 Reports are now available on compass for parents/carers. Take the time to talk to your child about their report.
In PALS we will be working with the Year 7 students to set goals around what areas of their learning they would like to improve on (after reflecting on their report) and how to go about achieving this goal. It would be good if you could discuss this with your child so that you can support them at home in achieving this goal.
If you are having any problems accessing your child's report, please contact the school either by phone or email - info@sjedow.catholic.edu.au, and our amazing administrative staff will be able to help.
FOUNDATION DAY
I was so impressed with the way that Year 7 fulfilled their responsibilities supporting and manning their PALS groups stall for Foundation Day. It is a special day for the St Johns community and Year 7 embraced the opportunity to be part of this special day.
G'DAY MASS AND MORNING TEA
I would like to thank the extended family that came to join our school community for “G’Day Mass”. These shared experiences form special memories for everyone and strengthen connections for students and the special people in their lives.
Year 7 Coordinator
I would like to thank ALL the parents that attended the recent subject selection evening. The positive involvement of parents is key to a child’s happiness and success and the presence of so many parents augurs well for our students in the future. Student subject selections should be completed by the 29th June. In addition, final selections need to be printed and signed by parents and returned to their PALS teacher by this date.
Another focus for the evening was providing information for parents on how to manage and support their children when dealing with cyberbullying and access to social media
The link below was provided as a resource for parents. This website helps answer questions such as What to do if your child is being cyberbullied? and I am worried my child may be bullying others.
Your child may not tell you if they are experiencing bullying behaviour online because of a fear it might make things worse for them or they may lose access to their devices and the internet. The website has case studies that look at different experiences of cyberbullying and what parents can do if their child is being cyberbullied.
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/issues-and-advice/cyberbullying
It is important for students and parents to work together in having a “healthy” relationship with social media and ensuring that their child has a regular break from accessing devices. Consider your child’s screen use in the context of their overall health and wellbeing. For example, is online time getting in the way of their sleep and exercise? Is it impacting their face-to-face connections with family and friends? Is it impacting on the time available to complete school work? The answers to these questions will guide you and help strike the right balance of online and offline activities for your child. The website below will provide you with the information to help you support your child manage a healthy relationship with social media
https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent
Some of the strategies suggested include:
- Involve your child in creating a family plan for leisure and entertainment time that balances time spent sitting in front of screens — including time online and watching TV — and a variety of offline activities.
- Work out the plan together. Young people are more likely to respond to rules they have contributed to and see as being fair and consistent.
- As well as agreed age-based time limits, the plan could include rules about which websites can be visited and online games can be played. It could also include control of access to the internet or devices, perhaps with daily passwords revealed once family time, homework and chores are complete.
- A minor reduction each day or a ‘15-minutes to switch-off’ warning can help the transition to a more balanced use of time.
This may require parents to make some decisions that may challenge the relationship with their child but as Isaac Slade from “The Fray” sings - “sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same”
Looking forward to continuing our ongoing collaboration!
“With strong minds and gracious hearts”
Ms Wendy Isemonger
Year 8 Coordinator
SCHOOL PLAY
Director’s Opening Note
Welcome all and one, bar no one, as we aim tonight to bring you a bit of fun.
Tonight’s delectable degustation of delights begins with a tasty telling of a few urban myths that whilst imagined by some to be a bit tall in the telling of the tale may well have more than a grain of truth.
Our next course reveals itself to be a modern interpretation of a classic, The Tell Tale Heart. Originally concocted by Edgar Allem Poe, it tells the story of a rather demented man who decided that he would kill his landlord for having these horrible pale blue eyes, and then buries him beneath the floorboards. Then the police arrive and the tenant is so racked with guilt he imagines he can hear the landlord's heartbeat beneath the floor beating louder and louder and confesses to the police. Our version is cooked up within our very own school and is rather tasty.
The main course tonight is FWAYMTZOT. Strange things are afoot in Lostown Wolves are howling, cats are meowing, dogs are barking, birds are squawking, mice are screaming, rabbits are roaring and children…….. are even more appallingly lethargic than usual. How disgusting! Even worse, they are starting to say the same things, wear the same clothes, doing really bad dance routines and posting them on Tik Tok and meeting up after school to drink decaf-mocha-latte-soy-frappuccinos. Seriously?! In fact it is like they are turning into zombies and it will come as no surprise that tonight, yes tonight, is the Night of the Zombies, a fateful occurrence that happens once every 200 hundred years. It is time for all in Lostown to Fight With All Your Might The Zombies Of Tonight!!!

OPEN HOCKEY
The open boys and girls hockey teams competed in the Diocesan Championships on Monday 19 June, braving the icy winter morning in Narellan.
OPEN GIRLS
The open girls team played with great spirit, teamwork and enthusiasm, coming away with a mix of wins, draws and losses on the day. A great day was had by all, and many of our students put themselves out there to try something new which is pleasing to see.
OPEN BOYS
The open boys team were feeling confident as they stepped onto the frozen Narellan turf. In a game against Holy Spirit captain Samuel Phillips linked up with hockey veteran Matthew Page to release Adam Staunton down the right side of the field for a great goal and a 1-0 victory. Eager to go the boys turned up for their second game and were pressured hard by St Josephs who had the better of the play, but they didn’t account for Riley Mason’s exquisite stick skills slotting home the winner the game again finishing 1-0. St Benedicts were next and unfairly actually had a lot of their team made up of actual hockey players; some great keeping by Noah Sheehan kept the score respectable Johnnies going down 4-0.
Despite the last game the boys were feeling confident and apparently generous. Corpus hadn’t scored a goal yet so Arabici Talty decided to put one in for the opposition and another goal was scored from a deflected Johnnies stick 0-2. Many would see this as a loss but not this team adding 2 new goal scorers to the ever growing list. Due to goal difference we missed the semis and played off for 7th against Mt Carmel easily accounting for them 3-1 with Tom Brookes taking credit for at least 2 of these goals. Many thanks to Matthew Page, Thomas Brookes and Alexander Evans for umpiring on the day. All in all it must be said that hockey was the real winner on the day.

Well done to McCabe on being the 2023 House Cup winners!
The results were as follows:
6th place - Chisholm
5th place - Benedict
4th place - MacKillop
3rd place - Polding
2nd place - Purcell
1ST PLACE - MCCABE
The year 12 house captains shared their Athletics carnival experience and their favourite part of the day below:
BENEDICT
Many setbacks throughout this year for the Athletics carnival have fueled all competitors with house spirit, determination and a common goal – for the Bulls to win! The day had beautiful weather with strong winds of Benedictian glory! It was a great day to take a breather from normal school life and with great participation throughout the day across both the track and field events Benedict made sure that their name was known throughout the carnival. The day ended with Benedict winning the Intermediate Relay and great efforts in both the Junior and Senior Relays.
Robert Mclean and Elizabeth Coulthart (Benedict House Captains)
CHISHOLM
The 2023 SJE athletics carnival was filled with wonders as the mighty Chisholm team poured blood, sweat and tears into every event. It was amazing to be able to enjoy our friends' company without schoolwork, and it was even better to see so many people from Chisholm participating. The day ended far too soon, with Chisholm WINNING the junior relay and placing SECOND in the intermediate & senior, well done team! A big thanks to all who contributed to the day, you definitely made it Chisholm’s best athletics carnival.
Arabici Talty and Caitlin Fairs (Chisholm House Captains)
MACKILLOP
On the 20th of June, the school participated in the 2023 Mackillop School athletics carnival. It was an outstanding event that demonstrated the athletes' talent, dedication, and unity. The unbroken house spirit made the day a remarkable celebration of the skills present at St John's, despite the chilly start to the day. The participation of Mackillop exceeded the rest, as purple was prominent in every race and field event, securing numerous victories in a variety of events. We would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this the best athletics carnival yet.
Dylan Johnstone and Matilda Sinclair (Mackillop House Captains)
McCABE
After 2 cancelled dates for the athletics carnival, the sun finally came out on the 20th of June to make for a great day for our 2023 athletics carnival.
McCabe’s usual display of athleticism shone through during the senior relay where Ruby, Kate, Denzel and Oscar took out the competition - including 2 teachers teams. Not only were our seniors at their best - it was encouraging to see so many McCabe juniors getting involved and trying their best. The track events were buzzing with blue, with many of our Year 7’s and 8’s dominating. MVPs of the day include Maluane Poleka, Jake Swan, Ruby Marshall, Bridget Fairs, Julian Gentile and Kate Drinkwalter. Thank you McCabe for another great carnival and giving it all you got.
Blake Gasnier and Grace Hartigan (McCabe House Captains)
POLDING
Robbie roared the Polding chant as we marched over to Shoalhaven High School in high spirits. Polding powered out the BBQ with the most volunteers out of all of the house groups, cooking up a storm of bacon and egg rolls and sausage sandwiches. The sun was shining and the conditions were optimal for Polding’s extraordinary participation in both the track and field events across all year groups. Year 12 Polding went out with a bang in their final carnival, special mention to: Byron blitzing the 200m sprint, Raphie reigning supreme in the long jump, Bela’s brilliant shot putting, Chloe carving up the running track, Liam who leapt over the finish line, Adam’s angelic high jump performance, Lachlan’s lightening relay and Imogen who faltered in an intense sprint competition against Mrs Berryman. The athleticism of the junior Polding was strong as always, seeing Polding dominate in the relays and finish in a strong position at the end of the day. A big thank you to everybody who dressed up, got involved in the events, and showed some house spirit. GO POLDING
Byron Tretheway and Amelia McCarthy (Polding House Captains)
PURCELL
This last athletics carnival was definitely one to remember. The day was amazing, seeing the younger years and older groups join in on events and making it a great experience for everyone. With competitiveness in the air, and a bit of house rivalry it built up to a great day. A favourite part of the day would have to be seeing Purcell dressed up and ready to win, while some were dressed in house colours and others tried to have the best costume of the day. Besides some friendly competition between the other house captains, the day just kept on getting better with the canteen selling milo cups and egg and bacon rolls. As you may be aware, Shoalhaven City Council is currently preparing a Coastal Management Program (CMP) to help manage and protect the Lower Shoalhaven River.
